Dear Parents,

I hope that you and your family have had a restful and eventful summer break. I am sure you and your child(ren) are excited about the coming school year. As you may be aware there are a few changes at Shaw Elementary School this year beginning with your new principal! Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Mr. Jack Davern. I have served Scotland County Schools as a 4th grade teacher at Wagram Primary, Covington Street and right here at Shaw when it became an Elementary school! I have been a curriculum specialist, SCHOLARS Site Coordinator and an Assistant Principal at I. Ellis Johnson. I am a National Board Certified Teacher and hold a Master’s Degree in School Administration. I plan to bring about innovative ideas for increased success at Shaw Elementary. I plan on working toward bringing our level of technology up to the demands of our technological society, move to the next step with PBS, increase focus and student performance in math and reading. I look forward to working with the district office, PTO and our business partners to support teachers and students with classroom needs.

As you know, your direct involvement in your child’s education will do more to determine their academic success than just about any other indicator. We know that parental involvement comes in many forms. While your work schedule may prevent you from attending our events I do encourage good communication between you and your child’s teachers through notes, calls or email messages. This handbook is designed to keep you informed of the policies and procedures of Shaw Elementary and those of Scotland County Schools. From time to time these policies will change and written notice of those changes will be sent to you.

I look forward to a great year and I know that with your support we will be able to make things happen! Please know that I am here for you and your child. I plan on spending a great deal of time in classrooms and planning with teachers. Should you need to meet with me the best way is to call ahead to set up a time to sit down and talk.
